GameSpy's Top 10 Game Series places Ultima at #2, second only to DOOM.
GameSpy listed Ultima IV as #7 on its list of the Top 50 Games of All Time (U3 is at #41 and U5 is at #42) - Not many RPGs can be said to take you from the seat of your room to an incarnation of ultimate holy power. This, however, was exactly the experience the famous Lord British brough to early RPG-goers with what many consider to be the pinnacle of the series: Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. The Ultima series has always been known for it's attention to detail, but this title was a cut above the others for many gamers - and indeed above many RPGs in general. The issues surrounding morality were of paramount concern in this title, immersing the user in the plot by creating direct consequences for his or her actions. By giving a peasant your last piece of gold or finding the right mantras to pray at the right shrines, you increased your spiritual attunement in perparation for the final battle against the ultimate evil of Britannia and to become a true, moral example for its peoples. The story and indeed the game itself couldn't have been more epic and the sense of accomplishment after it's completion couldn't have been more satisfying.
GameSpot lists Ultima III as one of the 15 Most Influential Games of All Time - There's no question that Richard Garriott's Ultima series is one of the most influential in all of PC gaming. Not only did the long-running series help establish the conventions of the successful and popular computer role-playing genre, but it also served as the flagship product of Origin Systems. Origin was one of the top game developers and publishers through the '80s and '90s, and it created many critically acclaimed games in that time. All these games were gauged against the relative quality and success of Ultima, because for at least 15 years, Ultima stood as one of the finest examples of technologically advanced and highly original game design.
